| Dunlop Tyres Dunlop Tyres is an international United Kingdom-based company founded in 1888 by John Boyd Dunlop after he invented the modern pneumatic inflatable tyre. Its first factory opened in Dublin in 1889. The company today is now based at the Fort Dunlop factory in Birmingham, opened in 1891. The company today makes various tyres for all vehicles including the most popular motorbike tyre as well as having a close association with motorsport. Dunlop is the sole tyre supplier to British Touring Car Championship for 2003 to 2006 for example. During the 1970s, Dunlop pioneered the world's first 'fail safe' tyres, permitting a vehicle to continue moving safely even following a blowout. Dunlop is also the world leader in aircraft tyres producing 100,000 tyres a year from its Birmingham facility. The firm also makes tennis rackets and other sports goods. Their "General Rubber Goods" factory on Cambridge Street in Manchester (UK) (now closed down) made breathing bags for British naval type frogman's rebreathers supplied by Siebe Gorman. |
